What is AEO? Answer engine optimisation for Shopify stores

Short answer: AEO, or answer engine optimisation, is the practice of shaping your content so that answer engines (ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot and voice assistants) can find a clear, correct answer on your page and cite you as the source. For a Shopify store, that means making your products, policies and expertise easy for machines to read, quote and trust.

If SEO is about earning a place in a list of ten blue links, AEO is about becoming the sentence the machine actually says. As more shoppers start their research by asking an AI tool what to buy, that sentence matters.

Why AEO matters for ecommerce now

Search behaviour is splitting. Some shoppers still type a short query into Google and click through results. A growing number ask a full question, such as "what's the best vitamin C serum for sensitive skin under $60 in Australia", and read a generated answer that names a handful of brands and products. Google now shows AI-generated summaries above organic results for many informational queries, and ChatGPT, Perplexity and others browse the web and cite sources.

For a store owner, that creates two risks and one opportunity. The first risk is that you rank well but the AI summary answers the question before anyone scrolls to you. The second is that you're simply not mentioned when someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation. The opportunity is that most Shopify stores haven't done anything about this yet, so the brands that structure their content for answers now get a head start that is hard to catch.

The keyword data reflects the interest. In our own research (DataForSEO via Google Ads data, November 2026), "aeo" alone attracts around 1,600 searches a month in Australia and about 27,100 in the US, and "llms.txt" around 590 and 5,400. Business owners are actively trying to understand this.

AEO vs SEO: what's actually different?

AEO isn't a separate discipline that replaces SEO. It's a layer on top. Answer engines still need to crawl your pages, understand what they're about and decide whether to trust them, which is exactly what SEO has always worked on. What changes is the shape of the content that wins.

  • SEO asks: will this page rank for the query?
  • AEO asks: when an engine needs to answer a question, is this page the easiest, safest source to quote?
  • GEO (generative engine optimisation) asks: when a model is asked for a recommendation, does it know and trust this brand enough to mention it?

We go deeper on the three in GEO vs SEO vs AEO. The practical takeaway is that a page optimised for answers tends to be clearer, better structured and more useful for human shoppers too.

How answer engines choose what to cite

No AI company publishes a full recipe, and results change from run to run, so be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed citation. But the signals that make a page easy to quote are consistent and sensible.

  1. Access. If a crawler can't fetch your page, it can't use it. Robots.txt rules, bot-blocking apps and aggressive firewall settings sometimes shut out AI crawlers without the store owner knowing.
  2. Clarity. A direct answer in the first few sentences, under a heading that mirrors the question, is far easier to extract than an answer buried in paragraph six.
  3. Structure. Lists, tables, short paragraphs and FAQ blocks break information into quotable units. Structured data (schema) describes products, prices, reviews and questions in a format machines don't have to guess at.
  4. Consistency. If your price, ingredients or shipping policy differ between your product page, your FAQ and a marketplace listing, a model has a reason to doubt all of them.
  5. Authority. Mentions and links from trusted sites, real author and business details, and a history of accurate content all make a source safer to cite.

The AEO checklist for Shopify stores

Here's the order we work through for clients, starting with the fixes that remove blockers before the ones that add polish.

1. Open the door to AI crawlers

Check your robots.txt (in Shopify, it's generated from the robots.txt.liquid template and can be customised). Make sure you're not disallowing crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot or ClaudeBot unless you've made a deliberate decision to. Then check any bot-protection apps or CDN rules, because they sometimes challenge or block non-browser visitors. This is a five-minute check that can undo months of invisible exclusion.

2. Add an llms.txt file

An llms.txt file is a plain-text, markdown-formatted guide at the root of your domain that tells AI tools what your site is and where the most useful pages live. It's a proposed standard rather than a guaranteed ranking factor, but it's low effort and low risk. We explain how to set one up on Shopify in llms.txt for Shopify.

3. Fix your entity basics

Answer engines need to know who you are. Organization schema should state your business name, logo, URL, contact details and social profiles, and those details should match what appears on your About page, footer, Google Business Profile and marketplaces. If there's a real founder or expert behind the brand, give them a proper author or About page.

4. Rewrite key pages answer-first

Start with the pages closest to revenue: your top collections, best-selling products, and the guides that bring in early-stage traffic. Open each with a one- or two-sentence direct answer to the main question the page targets. Use headings that sound like the questions customers ask. Put specs, sizing, ingredients and shipping details in lists or tables rather than long prose.

5. Add FAQ blocks and schema

Real questions from your customer service inbox, reviews and search data make the best FAQ content. Answer each in two to four sentences, then mark the block up with FAQPage schema. Add or check Product, Offer and Review schema so your price, availability and ratings are machine-readable. Most modern Shopify themes output basic Product schema, but it's often incomplete.

6. Make every fact consistent

Audit your prices, delivery times, returns policy and key product claims across your site, Google Merchant Center, marketplaces and social profiles. Fix contradictions. Consistency is one of the simplest trust signals you control.

7. Earn mentions beyond your own site

AI tools learn about brands from the wider web, not just your store. Press coverage, expert quotes, reviews, directories and partner pages all contribute. This is where AEO blends into GEO and digital PR, covered in our backlinks and digital PR service.

What answer-first content looks like

Take a collection page for linen bedding. A typical Shopify collection page has a title, a grid of products and perhaps a sentence of copy. An answer-first version adds a short introduction that answers "what is the best linen bedding for hot climates?" in two sentences, a small table comparing weights and weaves, and a four-question FAQ underneath the grid covering care, shrinkage, sizing and delivery times. The products still come first visually. The supporting content gives search engines and answer engines something substantial to read and quote.

The same principle works on product pages. Lead with who the product is for and the main benefit, then give scannable details. If customers keep emailing to ask whether a serum is safe during pregnancy or whether a dress runs small, answer it on the page.

How to measure AEO

Traditional rank tracking doesn't capture whether you're being cited in AI answers, so build your own measurement.

  • Write a fixed list of 20 or so buyer questions your store should be part of the answer to.
  • Run them through ChatGPT, Google (AI Overviews or AI Mode) and Perplexity on a set date each month, and record whether you're cited or mentioned.
  • Date every check, because answers vary between runs and over time.
  • Watch Search Console for impression growth on question-style queries, and your analytics for referrals from AI tools.

This is exactly how we track our own publication. On LUSTRE Mag, ChatGPT cited the site in 4 of 20 test questions on 2 November 2026, up from 2 of 20 on 24 October, in its first weeks live. Small numbers, honestly reported, measured the same way every time.

Common AEO mistakes

  • Blocking AI crawlers by accident through a security app or a copied robots.txt rule.
  • Writing for the machine instead of the shopper. Keyword-stuffed FAQs help nobody. Answer real questions well.
  • Adding schema that doesn't match the page. Marking up reviews or FAQs that aren't visible to visitors breaks Google's guidelines and erodes trust.
  • Treating llms.txt as a magic switch. It helps tools find your best content, but it can't make thin content worth citing.
  • Expecting overnight results. Answer engines refresh their understanding over weeks and months.

Where to start this month

If you only do three things, do these: confirm AI crawlers can access your store, rewrite your top five collection pages with a direct answer and a short FAQ, and set up a 20-question citation check so you have a baseline. Then build from there.

AEO is included in every Elodae plan, from AI-crawler access, Organization schema and llms.txt in Polish, to FAQ schema and answer-first content in Grow, and full GEO with citation tracking in Scale. See AEO and GEO services or request a free audit and we'll show you where your store stands.

FAQ

Common questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for answer engine optimisation (answer engine optimization in US spelling). It means structuring content so AI tools and search features can lift a clear answer from your page and cite you.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO. Answer engines still rely on pages they can crawl, understand and trust, so technical SEO, good content and links remain the foundation.

How long does AEO take to work?

Structural fixes such as crawler access, schema and answer-first rewrites can be picked up within weeks, but citations vary from run to run. Measure against a fixed question set over months, not days.

Does Shopify support AEO?

Yes. Shopify lets you edit content, add structured data through your theme or apps, control robots.txt and publish FAQ content, which covers most of what AEO needs.
