llms.txt for Shopify: what it is and how to add one

Short answer: llms.txt is a plain-text file, written in markdown, that sits at yourdomain.com/llms.txt and tells AI tools what your site is about and which pages matter most. It's a proposed standard, not an official Google requirement, and it isn't a ranking switch. For a Shopify store it's a quick, low-risk addition to a wider answer engine optimisation (AEO) plan.

Interest is high. In November 2026, "llms.txt" was searched around 590 times a month in Australia and 5,400 times in the US (DataForSEO, Google Ads data). Here's what store owners actually need to know.

Where llms.txt came from

The llms.txt format was proposed in 2024 as a way for websites to give large language models a concise, curated summary instead of making them parse complex HTML pages full of navigation, scripts and pop-ups. The idea is simple: a human-readable markdown file with a title, a short description and lists of links to the most useful content, grouped under headings.

Some AI tools and developer platforms read it; others ignore it. Google has said it doesn't use it for Search. So the honest position is: it can help, it can't hurt, and it shouldn't be the centrepiece of your strategy.

Why it's still worth doing for ecommerce

  • It's quick. A good llms.txt for most stores takes an hour to write.
  • It forces clarity. Writing a two-sentence description of your brand and choosing your 15 most important pages is a useful exercise in itself, and the same description should then appear consistently everywhere.
  • It points tools at your best answers. Instead of a model stumbling onto a filtered collection URL or an out-of-date blog post, you're signposting buying guides, policies and core collections.
  • It's a signal that you take AI discovery seriously, which goes hand in hand with the other AEO work that does move the needle.

What to put in a Shopify store's llms.txt

Keep it short, factual and current. A good structure:

  1. An H1 with your brand name.
  2. A one-paragraph summary in a blockquote: what you sell, who for, where you're based and what makes you different.
  3. Key facts: shipping regions, delivery times, returns window, price range and contact email. Make sure they match your policy pages exactly.
  4. Sections of links, each with a short description:
  5. Core collections
  6. Best-selling or flagship products
  7. Buying guides and comparisons
  8. Policies (shipping, returns, warranty)
  9. About and contact
  10. An optional section for lower-priority pages, such as your blog archive.

Here's a simplified example for a fictional linen brand:

# Example Linen Co.

> Australian brand selling premium European flax linen bedding, towels and loungewear. Based in Byron Bay, shipping Australia-wide and to New Zealand.

Key facts: free shipping over $150 in Australia; 30-day returns on unused items; contact hello@example.com.

How to publish llms.txt on Shopify

Shopify doesn't give you direct access to your domain's root folder, so you can't simply upload a file to /llms.txt the way you could on a self-hosted site. There are three practical routes. Whichever you choose, test the final URL in a private browser window.

Option 1: a URL redirect to a hosted file

  1. Create your llms.txt as a plain-text file.
  2. Upload it under Content > Files in your Shopify admin and copy its URL.
  3. Go to Online Store > Navigation > URL redirects (in some admin versions it's under Content > Menus), and create a redirect from /llms.txt to the file's URL.

Shopify only applies URL redirects to paths that would otherwise return a 404, which /llms.txt normally does, so this works on most stores. The trade-off is that the file is served from Shopify's CDN domain after a redirect, which most tools follow without issue.

Option 2: an app

Several apps in the Shopify App Store now generate and serve llms.txt, sometimes updating it automatically from your collections and products. Check what each app actually outputs, keep the file curated rather than a dump of every product, and avoid installing a heavy app just for this.

Option 3: a page template (advanced)

A developer can create a template that outputs plain text and assign it to a page, then redirect /llms.txt to that page. This keeps the content editable in Shopify but needs care to make sure the response is clean text without theme markup.

Keep it accurate

The fastest way to undermine trust is an llms.txt that contradicts your site. Put a reminder in your calendar to review it whenever you change shipping, returns, pricing or major collections, and at least once a quarter.

What llms.txt won't do

It won't make thin pages worth citing, override a robots.txt block, or replace schema. If AI crawlers can't access your store, or your collection pages are just a product grid with no explanation, an llms.txt file won't fix that. Treat it as one item on a checklist that also includes:

  • AI crawler access in robots.txt and any bot-protection apps
  • Organization, Product, Review and FAQ schema
  • Answer-first copy on collection and product pages
  • Consistent brand and policy information across the web
  • Earned mentions on trusted sites

llms.txt and robots.txt: how they fit together

People often confuse the two. Robots.txt is a set of access rules: which crawlers may fetch which parts of your site. llms.txt is a guide: here's what we are and where to start. If robots.txt blocks an AI crawler, the crawler shouldn't fetch llms.txt or anything else. So check robots.txt first, then publish llms.txt.

On Shopify, robots.txt is generated from the robots.txt.liquid template. Shopify's defaults are sensible for search, but some stores have added blanket blocks for AI crawlers after reading alarming articles, sometimes without the owner realising the trade-off. Decide deliberately.

Our experience

We publish llms.txt on our own sites, including LUSTRE Mag, as part of a full AEO setup alongside schema, answer-first content and internal linking. In its first weeks live, ChatGPT cited LUSTRE in 4 of 20 test questions (2 November 2026), up from 2 of 20 on 24 October. We can't attribute that to llms.txt alone, and we wouldn't claim to. It's the combination that works.

A quick test after publishing

Open yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a private browser window and on your phone. Confirm it loads as plain text, every link works and points to the canonical URL, and the facts match your policy pages today. Then paste the URL into an AI tool with browsing enabled and ask it to summarise your store. If the summary is wrong or vague, the problem is usually your summary paragraph, so make it more specific.

Common llms.txt mistakes

  • Dumping every product URL. A file listing thousands of products defeats the purpose. Curate the pages that explain your brand and answer buyers' questions.
  • Marketing fluff. Write the summary like a factual encyclopedia entry, not an ad. Models favour clear, checkable statements.
  • Stale facts. An old shipping threshold or returns window in llms.txt contradicts your site.
  • Linking to redirected or filtered URLs. Use clean, canonical URLs.
  • Forgetting it exists. Add it to your quarterly SEO review.

Should you also publish llms-full.txt?

Some sites publish a second file, llms-full.txt, containing the full text of key pages in markdown. It's more useful for documentation-heavy sites than for most stores. For ecommerce, a curated llms.txt plus well-structured pages is usually enough.

FAQ

Common questions

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed standard: a markdown-formatted text file at the root of your domain that summarises your site for large language models and links to your most useful pages.

Does llms.txt improve rankings?

There's no evidence it's a ranking factor for Google. Treat it as a low-cost way to help AI tools understand your site, alongside crawler access, schema and clear content.

Can I add llms.txt to Shopify?

Shopify doesn't let you upload arbitrary files to the root of your domain, so stores typically use a URL redirect from /llms.txt to a hosted file or page, or an app built for the purpose. Test the result in a browser.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. Robots.txt tells crawlers what they may access. llms.txt is a guide to what's on your site and where the best content is. They do different jobs and you can have both.
