What's a good Shopify conversion rate, and how to lift yours
Short answer: There's no single "good" Shopify conversion rate. Widely published averages sit in the low single digits, but they mix together every category, price point and traffic source, so they're a weak benchmark. A good conversion rate is one that's rising against your own history, segmented by device and traffic source. The fastest gains for established stores usually come from clearer product pages, fewer surprises at checkout, faster mobile pages and better follow-up on abandoned carts.
Why benchmarks mislead
You'll see plenty of articles quoting an "average" Shopify conversion rate. Treat them with caution, for three reasons.
- Category and price. A $25 consumable and a $900 sofa convert very differently. Comparing them is meaningless.
- Traffic mix. Returning customers and email clicks convert far better than cold social traffic. If you run a big top-of-funnel campaign, your conversion rate can fall while revenue rises.
- Measurement. Shopify, GA4 and other tools define sessions differently. Bots, internal traffic and consent banners all distort the numbers.
So the question to ask isn't "am I above average?" It's "where are shoppers dropping out, and is that improving?"
What we've seen on a real store
When Gemma ran an Australian beauty and haircare retailer end to end in 2024, the store's Shopify data showed a 4.56% conversion rate across 2024 year to date, 6.91% in November 2024, and 13.01% over Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Those figures came from the client's own Shopify reports and reflect paid ads run by an outside agency she managed, alongside her conversion, SEO and email work. They show how much conversion varies by period and campaign, even on one store. See the full case study.
How to measure your conversion rate properly
- Use Shopify's own reports for the headline figure: sessions converted divided by total sessions.
- Segment by device. Mobile usually has more sessions and a lower conversion rate. Look at each separately.
- Segment by traffic source. Organic, email, paid social, direct and referral behave differently.
- Look at the funnel steps: sessions with add to cart, sessions reaching checkout, and sessions converted. Where's the biggest drop?
- Compare like with like: this November with last November, not with a quiet February.
12 ways to lift your Shopify conversion rate
Product pages
1. Answer the buyer's questions above the fold. Who is it for, what's the main benefit, how much, and when will it arrive? If shoppers have to scroll or open tabs to find out, many won't.
2. Show real reviews prominently. Ratings near the title and detailed reviews with photos further down reduce risk for first-time buyers.
3. Fix your images. Multiple angles, scale, texture and in-use shots. On mobile, make sure the gallery is easy to swipe and the add-to-cart button is still reachable.
4. Make variants obvious. Clear size guides, colour swatches that match reality, and out-of-stock variants that don't trap people.
5. Write copy that sells, not just describes. Original descriptions that lead with benefits and handle objections. See our product copy service.
Collections and navigation
6. Make collections easy to filter by the attributes buyers care about: size, colour, price, skin type, material.
7. Help people who search. Many shoppers use on-site search. Check what they're searching for and whether results are relevant, including misspellings and synonyms.
Cart and checkout
8. Remove surprises. Unexpected shipping costs and delivery times are among the most common reasons people abandon checkout. Show shipping thresholds and estimates early, on product pages and in the cart.
9. Offer the payment methods your customers expect, such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and the buy-now-pay-later options popular with your audience.
10. Keep the cart simple. Upsells can help, but too many pop-ups and add-ons at the cart stage create friction.
Speed and trust
11. Speed up mobile pages. Remove unused app code, compress images and cut unnecessary third-party scripts. A faster store converts and ranks better.
Follow-up
12. Recover abandoned carts and checkouts. A well-built abandoned checkout flow with two or three emails is one of the highest-return automations a store can run. Our guide to Klaviyo flows for Shopify explains how to set one up.
Mobile deserves its own review
For most Shopify stores, the majority of sessions are on mobile, so a small mobile problem costs more than a big desktop one. Do a monthly walk-through on a real phone, not just a resized browser:
- Can you see the price, a review rating and the add-to-cart button without scrolling far?
- Do pop-ups close easily, and do they cover the product?
- Is the size guide readable without pinching and zooming?
- Does the sticky cart or chat widget block anything important?
- How long does the product page take to become usable on mobile data?
- Can you complete checkout with an express payment method in a few taps?
Write down every moment of friction. That list is often your next month of fixes.
Use your customer service inbox
Your support emails and chat logs are a free conversion research tool. Every question a customer asks before buying ("Does this come in a larger size?", "When will it arrive in Perth?", "Is it safe for sensitive skin?") is a question other shoppers had and didn't ask. They just left. Group the questions by product and theme, then answer them on the relevant product pages, in FAQ blocks, and in your abandoned checkout emails. It helps conversion, reduces support load, and gives search engines and AI tools more useful content to read.
Test or just fix?
Not everything needs an A/B test. If your shipping cost is hidden until the last step, just fix it. Testing is valuable when the outcome is genuinely uncertain, such as a new product page layout, a different offer or a navigation change, and when you have enough traffic to reach a reliable result. Running underpowered tests and declaring winners early is worse than not testing.
A simple approach:
- Fix obvious friction and errors straight away.
- Test substantial changes to high-traffic templates when you have the volume.
- Monitor everything else and roll back if metrics drop.
Conversion and SEO pull in the same direction
Many of the changes that lift conversion also help search. Faster pages improve Core Web Vitals. Original product copy that answers buyers' questions gives Google and AI tools more to rank and quote. Clear collection pages with helpful filters keep shoppers on the site longer. That's why we treat CRO and Shopify SEO as one programme rather than two separate projects. When one specialist owns both, a change to a product page is checked for its effect on rankings and on sales at the same time.
Common CRO mistakes
- Copying a competitor's layout without understanding why it works for them.
- Adding more apps to solve problems apps created.
- Optimising for conversion rate instead of revenue. A heavy discount pop-up can lift conversion while cutting margin.
- Ignoring returning customers. Retention through email often moves revenue more than squeezing first-time conversion.
- Changing many things at once and not knowing what worked.
A 30-day plan
- Week 1: segment your conversion rate by device and source, and find the biggest funnel drop.
- Week 2: fix shipping clarity, payment options and any mobile add-to-cart issues.
- Week 3: rewrite your top five product pages answer-first, with reviews visible.
- Week 4: check your abandoned checkout flow and speed up your heaviest template.
Then measure, compare with the same period last year, and choose the next round.
Questions to ask a CRO agency
Who actually does the work? How do you decide what to test versus simply fix? How will you report revenue, not just conversion rate? And have you run a Shopify store yourself? The answers tell you quickly whether you're buying experience or a template.
